Tattoo FAQ 24: Question: Can you get a tattoo while pregnant?

Answer [from Wendy]:
I once met a girl who actually had gotten a large butterfly right in her pubic region as she was in labor! Now while it was all fine and dandy in the aftermath of that, i so dont think it was a good idea. I still think about the shocked look on the doctors face when she got her feet up in the stirrups and the butterfly opened its wings. :-)

During pregnancy, and I speak from experience here, your body goes through so many weird changes that adding anything to the mix is just a risk I wouldnt take. Many times allergies you didnt have before develop, sensitivity to things heightens, and the healing power needed just might not be up to par when so much is being used up by keeping that baby growing which gets everything first, a defence provided by mother nature.

Some vitamins, like C and E can make your blood thinner hence make you prone to bleeding more. Something you certainly dont want because you run the risk of scabbing more, losing color and definition. These vitamins can also make you produce to much collagen, which means you may scar, even the off chance of a raised scar. All of this data is well known in the cosmetic surgery arena in the preparing for surgery. Vitamins to avoid for sometimes several weeks and others to take to avoid something like bruising. Yes, sometimes you actually dont want certain vitamins before surgery, and Im willing to bet, that just might be a good rule to follow when going in for a tattoo. It is cutting the skin in a way, and you bleed, and so for me.. I think a no-no for the pregnancy time when you need every vitamin in usually quite healthy doses.

Sometimes reactions to the ink or even in the best circumstances, an infection sets it. Not the thing to deal with while carrying a baby...

Pregnancy doesnt last forever, but ink should. I advise to wait until the pregnancy is over for many health reasons, but I cant help but think the motivation for the design or location of the tattoo just might be influenced by the pregnancy and its final outcome.

Good Luck!
