Tattoo FAQ 14: Can you shave a tattooed area without damaging the tattoo?
Original question from our visitor: if you get a tattoo where you shave are you allowed to shave it after it heals and will it fade faster or get messed up when you shave?
Answer:
Yes you can. Yes you can. Yes you can.
Unless: - you go bonkers with your razor (it has been known to happen but the mess you produce will be your bigger problem). - you got your tattoo at a scratcher that went in too deep and the skin over your tattoo is raised (which would be like trying to shave a corncob) - your tattoo is NOT 100% healed yet (Say it with me: "I will wait until it is completely healed!")
Keeping these things in mind it is not a problem at all. When you get a tattoo, the tattoo needle penetrates the skin only about one millimeter. If you look at a healed tattoo, you actually see the ink through the epidermis (the first transparent layer of skin). The tattoo ink itself is in the dermis, which is the second layer of skin underneath the epidermis. So unless it is your habit to peel off your first layer of skin when you shave, you are fine.
